Rules with parameters in modal logic I

چکیده

We study admissibility of inference rules and unification with parameters in transitive modal logics (extensions of K4), in particular we generalize various results on parameterfree admissibility and unification to the setting with parameters. Specifically, we give a characterization of projective formulas generalizing Ghilardi’s characterization in the parameter-free case, leading to new proofs of Rybakov’s results that admissibility with parameters is decidable and unification is finitary for logics satisfying suitable frame extension properties (called cluster-extensible logics in this paper). We construct explicit bases of admissible rules with parameters for cluster-extensible logics, and give their semantic description. We show that in the case of finitely many parameters, these logics have independent bases of admissible rules, and determine which logics have finite bases. As a sideline, we show that cluster-extensible logics have various nice properties: in particular, they are finitely axiomatizable, and have an exponential-size model property. We also give a rather general characterization of logics with directed (filtering) unification. In the sequel, we will use the same machinery to investigate the computational complexity of admissibility and unification with parameters in cluster-extensible logics, and we will adapt the results to logics with unique top cluster (e.g., S4.2) and superintuitionistic logics.

Suhrawardi's Modal Syllogisms

Suhrawardi’s logic of the Hikmat al-Ishraq is basically modal. So to understand his modal logic one first has to know the non-modal part upon which his modal logic is built. In my previous paper ‘Suhrawardi on Syllogisms’(3) I discussed the former in detail. The present paper is an exposition of his treatment of modal syllogisms. On the basis of some reasonable existential presuppositi...

Multi-modal and Temporal Logics with Universal Formula - Reduction of Admissibility to Validity and Unification

The article studies multi-modal (in particular temporal, tense, logics) possessing universal formulas. We prove (Theorems 11 and 12) that the admissibility problem for inference rules (inference rules with parameters) is decidable for all decidable multi-modal (in particular, temporal) logics possessing an universal formula and decidable w.r.t. unification (unification with parameters). These t...

From Gabbay-style rules to labelled deduction

Is there a link between Gabbay-style rules, modal languages with nominals, and labelled deduction? It seems there should be: though they differ in many ways, all share the idea that state-names are important in modal deduction. I shall show how to move from a Gabbay-style rule to labelled deduction via the basic hybrid language. I finish with a discussion of the place of state-names in modal lo...

Optimal intelligent control for glucose regulation

This paper introduces a novel control methodology based on fuzzy controller for a glucose-insulin regulatory system of type I diabetes patient. First, in order to incorporate knowledge about patient treatment, a fuzzy logic controller is employed for regulating the gains of the basis Proportional-Integral (PI) as a self-tuning controller. Then, to overcome the key drawback of fuzzy logic contro...

Deductive Systems for the Modal mu-Calculus

We survey deductive systems for the modal μ-calculus. The distinguishing feature between different such systems is how minimality of least fixed points is guaranteed. There are basically three ways to achieve this: (i) by induction rules, (ii) by semi-formal rules with infinitely many premises, or (iii) by a global condition on infinitely long proof branches.
